Alastair John Sellick is a Senior Fixed Income Portfolio Manager at Cadiz Asset Management South Africa, jointly responsible for a team of 6 interest rate professionals who oversee bond and money market assets in excess of R4bn. He was previously managing director of South Easter Fund Management (Pty) Ltd., a niche hedge fund management company, now in its 15th year of existence, which was sold to Cadiz Asset Management in 2015, and then acquired by Warwick, now the Spirit Group, in 2018. He oversees the running of the South Easter Fund, a fixed interest hedge fund that was established in 2005, as well as other specialist fixed interest mandates, including the Cadiz Money Market funds, the Cadiz Absolute Yield Fund (an income fund), passive bond index tracker funds, and specialist bond funds. He held the position of Head of Fixed Interest at PSG Asset Management (Pty) Ltd. from November 2011 till January 2013 and served as a director of PSG AM from May 2012 till January 2013. He joined South Easter Fund Management (Pty) Ltd., a subsidiary of PSG Absolute Investments (Pty) Ltd. on 1 October 2005, to found the South Easter Fund. In 2011, this was the highest returning fixed income hedge fund in South Africa over a five-year period, notably covering the volatile and difficult Great Financial Crisis of 2008. The South Easter Fund is currently in its fifteenth year of existence. Alastair spent the period from September 2002 till August 2005 founding and co-managing the Granite Fixed Income Fund, one of South Africa’s first fixed interest hedge fund offerings, at Decillion Fund Management (Pty) Ltd. Prior to that, he worked at Futuregrowth Asset Management in 2001 for a period of one year as fixed interest portfolio manager, managing the Futuregrowth Bond Fund, a bond unit trust, the Futuregrowth Income Fund, an income unit trust, as well as the Momentum Annuity Fund, an annuity fund valued at R 2.5bn. Over the two years from October 1999 to July 2001, he managed the Sanlam Annuity Portfolio, at Sanlam Investment Management and Gensec Bank, and this fund was around R 15bn in size at the end of his tenure.

Alastair matriculated from Pretoria Boys’ High, and then studied Actuarial Science at the University of Cape Town from 1991 to 1995. He joined Sanlam in 1996 to work back his actuarial bursary. He holds a B.Bus.Sci. (Actuarial) degree from the University of Cape Town, the Diploma in Actuarial Techniques (DAT) and the Certificate for Finance and Investment (CFI) from the Institute of Actuaries (London).

In 2017, he completed his first ABSA Cape Epic, placing 298th out of 660 team entries, and placed 208th in the 2019 Cape Epic, one of the world’s toughest mountain bike races. In 2020, he successfully completed the Cape 2 Rio Yacht Race, and Team Mojie placed second in its class, and 8th in the Monohull division. He enjoys kitesailing and big wave windsurfing, and when he isn’t working, he plays Western Province league squash and the occasional round of golf or boule. Alastair has a love for languages and can speak a few with varying degrees of fluency. He assists his wife Nicola in the raising of their daughter and young son and served as a governor at Oakhurst Girls’ Primary School in Rondebosch from 2012-2018.
